I talked with my uncle’s friend who’s a contractor to begin building our house. I had been sending him $3,000 every month for one year.

When I finally went to see it, the roof wasn’t straight, the floor was undone, rebar was sticking out of the inside columns, dried cement was constantly falling from the ceiling and the inside measurements were much smaller than the floor plan.

-Disappointing Quality

5 Years ago I bought a plot of land outside the city and I wanted to build on it. Living in Canada, I didn’t know who could help us design a house and build it. My friend introduced me to a builder they knew back home. I spoke with the builder and we agreed on the house plan. In the span of 4 months I sent $10,000 to begin with the foundation, another $7,000 for the walls, pipes and wiring, another $10,000 for the roof.

When I got a chance to visit home, I went to my plot to physically see all the progress that had been made. When I got there, I was shocked to see that there was a slab of cement that looked like the foundation with nothing else on top of it.

-Can’t Trust Anyone

After working for 15 years in Australia, I was planning to finally establish something back home. I had a plot of land and had been saving to begin construction back home. A colleague of mine introduced me to a friend back home and I had mentioned of my plans to build and he said that he’d be able to do it no problem. He seemed like a straightforward guy so we had an agreement and I sent him a $5,000 deposit.

I called him up 3 days later to gain clarity on the process moving forward and he didn’t pick up. I called him again the day after and he didn’t pick up. I tried calling him over and over for the course of one month, and his phone was constantly busy or he was unavailable. My colleague also tried contacting him on my behalf, but he also couldn’t get a hold of him. After 3 months I had to accept the fact that I had just been robbed.
